Obviously, Iljo Keisse is a fixture of the 80th Lotto Zesdaagse Vlaanderen-Gent. The Emperor of the Kuipke will again make up a royal duo together with Mark Cavendish, his current team mate at Deceuninck-Quick Step and 2016’s winner.
Keisse and Cavendish are riding the Lotto Zesdaagse Vlaanderen-Gent together for the third time. In 2014, they finished second and two years ago fourth. In 2016, Cavendish added the Ghent six days to his record with Bradley Wiggins as his team mate. 39-year-old Keisse, has been crowned overall winner of the Lotto Zesdaagse Vlaanderen-Gent with different team mates no fewer than seven times and is the crowd favourite as a true local, born and bred in Ghent.
This last road racing season, Mark Cavendish has been living out his second youth. The Brit showed that he can still be lightning fast at 36 by winning four stages and the green jersey in the Tour de France. In doing that, he emulated the all-time record of 34 stage wins recorded by Eddy Merckx. Michael Morkov, Cav’s lead-out in the last Tour, is also participating in the Lotto Zesdaagse Vlaanderen-Gent. The Dane is teaming up with his compatriot Lasse Norman Hansen. Last week, these two extended their World Title in the Madison race at the World Championships in Roubaix.
Other top duos to look forward to in Ghent next month are Jasper De Buyst/Roger Kluge and Kenny De Ketele/Robbe Ghys, they will be defending their title at the Kuipke and are bronze medal winners of the Madison event. De Ketele, who will be ending his career after this season, won two medals at the World Championships in Roubaix, the other one being silver in the Points Race.
