Gianluca Pollefliet and Noah Vandenbranden broke the Ghent U23 record on the 500 metres with a flying start and relay. After Thursday night’s action Nicolas Wernimont and Maxwell De Broeder retain their lead in the AVS Cup.
At the Kuipke track Pollefliet and Vandenbranden crossed the line in a time of 27:876, at an average speed of 64.57 kilometres per hour. They bested the 28:22 previously put on the board by Nicolas Wernimont and Maxwell De Broeder, who broke last year’s 28:24 record set by Danish duo Matias Malberg and Oliver Wulff Frederiksen.
“We are very happy with this record. Noah and I are actually real sprinters, so that’s why we made it. We were both at speed and managed to keep it up the whole distance,” Pollefliet explained. “We started this Future Six Days really well on Tuesday. We’re also just juniors, so we still have a big margin for improvement.”
“This is a very good learning school for us. In the points races we are suffering a lot, but that’s how you get stronger. On the first day we were really impressed by the event. I trained a lot with Noah and we’ve known each other for a while, so that must be an advantage.”
Nicolas Wernimont and Maxwell De Broeder remain in the AVS Cup lead after three nights with 52 points, four clear of Britain’s Oliver Stockwell and Oscar Nilsson-Julien. Gianluca Pollefliet and Noah Vandenbranden are third with 34 points.
