Milan Van Den Haute and Jasper Bertels are the new leaders in ‘t Kuipke in Ghent after the fifth night of the U23 AVS Cup. They crushed Saturday’s madison to put the competition one or more behind.
The penultimate evening of the U23 AVS Cup featured a single 210-lap madison. The race exploded from the start, but a crash forced the event to be neutralized, with German Benjamin Boos abandoning the race. After the restart, Milan Van den Haute and Jasper Bertels dominated the race, launching ferocious attacks that none of the competing duos could answer. Van Den Haute and Bertels succeeded in putting a lap on the field, putting them in a strong position ahead of the final day.
“Once we managed to get the lap, we just tried to control the race. We really had a super day,” a proud Van den Haute said. “We are going into the final day with full confidence.”
Van Den Haute and Bertels have amassed 101 points after five days. Three more Belgian teams are one lap down: Tom Crabbe/Stan Dens (100 points), Michiel L’Eau/Lennert Bertels (59 points) and Arthur Senrame/Renzo Raes (48 points).
