Nicolas Wernimont and Maxwell De Broeder have taken over the lead in the AVS Cup, the Future Six Days event in Ghent. They dethroned the British duo Oliver Stockwell and Oscar Nilsson-Julien.
The Belgians totalled 30 points after two nights, just one than the British pair. Dutchmen Mel van der Veekens and Philip Heijnen are third with 21 points.
“It keeps going really well for us”, Maxwell De Broeder said. “On the first night we were second and now we are doing even better by taking the lead. It’s a boyhood dream coming true. I’ve been through a tough period, missing pretty much the whole year due to mononucleosis. I actually never expected that I would ever reach my level again after that illness. Nicolas also had some bad luck, because he was out for a long time with stomach issues. We can’t complain, because we both fought back. This is giving us extra motivation for the coming days.”
